Stefanie Salzmann
Stefanie Salzmann works from Brussels and Switzerland.
Her artistic practice is closely linked to the history of her preferred material, wool of her family's Blacknose sheep an often unused by-product of sheep breeding. Salzmann accompanies the material from animal to sculpture. She undertakes this journey physically and mentally. Physically, through her craft, which is the result of her experiences as a fashion designer for Balenciaga, Akris, and Hermès. On the other hand, mental journeys, stories, possible and impossible (at least until they are granted). The textile works are about connections, value creation, intimate proximity to the material and resources in a broader sense.
The natural dyes she uses, tell the stories of their existence just like the wool and the works they become. With hands that felt, form, sew, and knot, express and comprehend, she weaves worlds like fictional tales and wonders.
